Botanical Name: hydrastis canadensis
Native Americans used goldenseal for irritations and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. Goldenseal's antibacterial and astringent properties facilitated common use of this herb for skin and eye infections (topically) and has been used traditionally as a mouthwash to help heal canker sores, for sore throats, and diarhhea.
Several of the active constitutents in goldenseal, the primary alkaloids berberine and hytrastine, offer antibiotic activity in the gastrointestinal tract against disease-causing organisms.
