In Ayurvedic medicine, the gummy exudate from boswellia is referred to as guggals, and were recommended for a variety of conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, pulmonary disease, and ringworm.
An active constituent in Boswellia Serrata is
the gum oleoresin, which consists of essential oils, gum, and terpenoids. The terpenoid part contains boswellic acids. Studies have shown that boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action and can be used to relieve inflammatory conditions.
Boswellia Serrata has been helpful with the treatment of ulcerative colitis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma.
