Health Tools:  Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator & Daily Calories

What is Basal Metabolic Rate?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator - Calculate Your Basal Metabolic Rate and Daily Calorie NeedThe basal metabolic rate is a measure of the energy expended by the body, while at rest, to keep the body functioning. It is the minimum amount of energy (expressed in calories) that the body needs just to be alive. When not at rest, the BMR increases according to the amount of activity, stress, fear, illness, and other factors. Someone with more muscle mass will have an increased basal metabolic rate, even at rest, because muscles burn more calories for maintenance and growth. A person's BMR decreases with age and the loss of lean muscle mass.

What does the Basal Metabolic Rate Calculations Mean?

After the BMR calculation is made based on your inputs, you are provided with two results. The first figure shows how many calories your body requires to just exist (at rest). The second figure gives an approximation of the calories you require based on your activity and lifestyle.

How Can You Increase Your Basal Metabolic Rate?

Eat small and frequent meals. Do weight training to build lean muscles. Aerobic exercise will temporarily increase your BMR to burn calories. Drink plenty of water. Get an adequate amount of sleep. All of these things affect your metabolism.
