The leaves and flowers of the mullein plant are used medicinally. Traditionally, mullein has been used as an expectorant and to soothe irritated mucous membranes. It has been used to treat respiratory tract problems, like coughs, bronchial congestion, pneumonia, and asthma. Topically, mullein soothes inflammatory skin problems and burns.

The active constituents in mullein are mucilage, saponins, and tannins. The mucilage has a soothing action on mucous membranses, and the saponins act as an expectorant.
