Lutein Facts
Lutein is part of the carotenoids family (over 600 have been identified in foods). Carotenoids are the pigments that give fruits and vegetables their colors of red, orange, and yellow.
How Lutein Works
Lutein is considered to be a potent disease-fighter and is one of six carotenoids that is used significantly by the body's blood and tissues. It works as an antioxidant to protect cell damage from free radicals. Women on oral contraceptives, or who are on estrogen replacement therapy have reduced levels of carotenoids and can benefit from supplementation.
