Botanical Name: Aesculus Hippocastanum
Horse Chestnut has been used traditionally (seeds, leaves, and bark) for medicinal purposes. Modern extracts are usually made from the seeds, which are high in the active constituent aescin, or escin. The leaves have been used by herbalists as a cough remedy, to reduce fevers, and to reduce pain and inflammation related to arthritis, rheumatism, and acute sprains.
Topically, poultices of the seeds have been used to treat skin ulcers and skin cancer. Additional uses include the internal and external application for problems of venous circulation, including varicose veins and hemorrhoids.
