The yellowish resin from the stems of the mukul myrrh tree is commonly referred to as guggul or gum guggulu and is used in modern extracts. Guggul is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat many problems, including rheumatism, atherosclerosis, and obesity. Guggul extracts are used in India for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
The active constituents in Guggul are resin, volatile oils, gum, and extracts derive compounds called guggulsterones. Guggul lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and raises HDL cholesterol. It also reduces the stickiness of platelets, thereby lowering the risk of coronary artery disease. In a clinical trial, Guggul was shown to be an effective treatment for cystic acne.
