Echinacea is believed to stimulate the immune system and ward off infections. The active constituents, alkylamides/polyacetylenes, caffeic acid derivatives, and polysaccharides, may work to increase white blood cell activity, and may also increase production of interferon, part of the body's response to deter viral infections.

Echinacea has traditionally been used to treat colds, coughs, flu, and upper respiratory conditions, and recent studies indicate that it is best used at the onset of symptoms, rather than for prevention purposes.
