Botonical name: taraxacum officinale
The leaves and root are used in dandelion herbal supplements. Dandelion has been used traditionally for the treatment of water retention, constipation, and for indigestion and heartburn. It has been used for hundreds of years to treat problems associated with the liver, gallbladder, kidney, and joints. Some consider this herb a blood purifier.

The active constituents in dandelion, sesquiterpene lactones (of the eudesmanolide and germacranolide type), are responsible for the beneficial actions on the digestive system and liver. It also is a rich source of vitamins and minerals and is particularly high in Vitamin A.

Dandelion has a diuretic effect and may be helpful with edema, or water retention. Its bitter compounds stimulate digestion, act as a mild laxative, and also increase the bile production in the gallbladder and bile flow from the liver.
