Botanical Name: bocopa monniera
Bacopa has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a diuretic and as a tonic for the nervous system and the heart. It has been used for the treatment of asthma, insanity, and epilepsy. Bacopa appears to promote antioxidant activity in the brain, and to exert other effects that may help protect brain cells.

An acitve constituent of Bacopa, saponins, including the bacosides, which are thought responsible for the therapeutic properties of this herb. It has been known to promote good mental function and learning ability, and has additional brain effects of reducing both anxiety and depression. This is attributed to an enhancement of the effects of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and possibly serotonin, or GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid).

Bacopa can relax the muscles that control the blood vessels, the intestine, and the airways of the respiratory system and can help both prevent and heal ulcers in the stomach.
